How to Match Photo Colors to a Reference Image
A practical workflow for choosing a useful reference, matching photo colors, and checking the result for natural skin, highlights, and shadows.

Color-grade matching works best when you treat a reference as a direction rather than a result to copy exactly. The source and reference were photographed with different light, subjects, cameras, and exposure, so the useful goal is a shared visual language: similar color relationships, contrast, and mood.
- Prepare the source. Set the crop, correct obvious exposure problems, and preserve as much highlight and shadow detail as possible.
- Choose a compatible reference. Look for similar lighting direction, contrast, and subject material, not just an image you admire.
- Run and compare. Match the images, then inspect skin, highlights, shadows, and important local colors at both preview and full size.
- Download the result. Keep the matched photo, or optionally export the look for use in another editing app.
What color-grade matching changes
Three parts of a photograph matter most. The palette is the family of hues and saturation: cool shadows, restrained greens, warm windows, or muted reds. Tonal structure describes the spacing from black through midtones to highlights, including whether contrast feels open and soft or deep and graphic. Local subject color belongs to the object itself, such as skin, a red jacket, a blue car, snow, or foliage.
A good match can move the palette and tonal structure while keeping local colors believable. When those layers agree, the result feels intentional. When they fight, it looks like a filter placed over the source. You may want the reference's cool-to-warm relationship without its crushed blacks, or its restrained saturation without its white balance. That distinction is more useful than trying to reproduce every color numerically.
Choose a useful reference
Start with light. A side-lit landscape and a side-lit city scene can support a similar contrast pattern; a flat portrait and a hard sunset usually need more interpretation. Compare where the highlights sit, how quickly shadows fall away, and whether the dominant light is warm, cool, soft, or direct.
Then compare dynamic range and subject matter. A reference with bright signs and nearly black streets can suggest a cinematic mood, but it cannot restore clipped detail or create convincing darkness in an evenly lit source. Landscape-to-landscape and portrait-to-portrait matches often settle more naturally because their materials and tonal relationships are closer. Cross-subject references can still work when their lighting logic is compatible.
For portraits, treat skin as a separate requirement. Choose references whose warmth and saturation leave room for believable variation, then inspect faces after matching. Use a clean, well-exposed reference that is large enough to preserve smooth gradients; heavy compression can turn subtle color transitions into blocks and false casts.

Check skin, highlights, and shadows separately. Skin should retain variation instead of becoming uniformly orange, green, or grey. Highlights should stay clean rather than picking up a colored veil, and shadows should keep enough separation to describe the scene. If one area becomes too forceful, try a reference with closer lighting or refine that area locally in your editor after download.
Judge the photograph, not the numerical similarity. A city reference may lend a mountain scene cooler shadows, amber highlights, and denser contrast, but stone, sky, and vegetation should still make sense in daylight. View the result small to judge its overall hierarchy, then large to catch banding, clipped channels, muddy shadows, or awkward skin shifts. The best match often keeps the reference's relationships without copying its extremes.
Common limitations
Mixed lighting is difficult because a room lit by daylight, warm lamps, and colored signs contains several white balances at once. A global match can improve one area while pushing another in the wrong direction. Choose a reference that resembles the important light in the scene and expect to make local corrections when the source contains competing light sources.
Clipped highlights and saturated channels cannot be reconstructed by color matching. Extreme white-balance differences may also move neutral objects toward implausible blue, yellow, green, or magenta. Strong brand colors, flowers, neon, lipstick, and reflective surfaces deserve individual judgment. Matching should create a coherent mood without erasing the details that make the source recognizable.
